New Super Mario Bros. Wii

The press conference started with the announcement of a new Mario game for the Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The game allows up to four players to play simultaneously in a traditional Mario game, fighting for power-ups. Creator Shigeru Miyamoto has been thinking about how to make a four-player traditional Mario-style game for about 15 years, and it looks like they have done it. The game looks like a lot of fun and will be released later that year.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Another Mario game announced was Super Mario Galaxy 2, which is also coming to the Wii. The game will be released sometime in the future, and it promises to be another exciting Mario adventure.

Metroid Other M

Nintendo also announced a new Metroid game, Metroid Other M, made with Team Ninja, creators of Ninja Gaiden. The game is a radical departure from the series, not using the first-person point of view that the last few Metroid Prime games did. The game will explore the backstory of Samus Aran, with a lot of cutscenes that previous Metroid games did not have. The game is not coming out that year, but it is something that hardcore gamers can look forward to.

New Wii Fit

Nintendo also talked about a brand new Wii Fit that allows users to put together their exercise routine. Users can omit all the current interludes between exercises, and their routine can move continuously for 2, 3, even 40 minutes at a time. Users can go into the virtual locker room and put all their exercises together. The new Wii Fit is coming out that year.

Nintendo DS Games

Nintendo also announced some games for the Nintendo DS, including Mario & Luigi, a new RPG starring the famous game brothers. The latest Mario & Luigi RPG game, subtitled Bowser’s Inside Story, has the brothers reduced to microbe size and ingested by their arch-enemy Bowser, where they go to work checking out Bowser’s internal pipe.

Wii Sports Resort

Nintendo showcased Wii Sports Resort, which will take advantage of the new Wii Motion Plus controller that gives users finer control of the game. The game will have more modes than the original Wii Sports, including archery and a skydiving mini-game. Wii Sports Resort will be one of Nintendo’s big releases for the late summer.

Conclusion

Overall, Nintendo’s E3 2009 press conference was a return to form for the company. They showcased games that appealed to long-time Nintendo fans and made significant improvements from the previous year’s event. The new Mario games, Metroid Other M, and Wii Sports Resort were among the highlights of the conference, and Nintendo’s future looked bright.
