Q&A

Jane Fonda’s Workout Program Embarrassment

Jane Fonda’s Workout program was a huge success in the 80s. Do you still stand behind that program today?

We do stand behind that program. However, we understand that it might seem outdated to some people now. But it was a groundbreaking fitness program that helped people from all backgrounds to get moving.

How do you look back on some of the exercises in today’s context?

Some of the exercises might seem funny to people today because they were different from what they usually did at the time. However, we were just trying to make fitness more fun and accessible to everyone.

Are there any exercises that you cringe at now?

Well, there was one exercise where we had to shake our breasts, which we don’t do anymore. That was just ridiculous, and we laugh about it now!

Age and Hip Replacement Surgeries

Both of you have now reached your 80s, can you tell us how it feels?

(Lily Tomlin) It feels great! I mean, we have all the aches and pains that come with aging, but other than that, mentally, we feel pretty good.

Jane, how has your experience been like after your hip replacement surgery?

It was a tough process, but the result was worth it. There was some pain initially, but now I can move around without any issues. And I’m even back to doing yoga!

You are quite different from what we typically imagine as an 80-year-old. How do you manage to stay so young?

Well, we do exercise regularly, but we also have a lot of fun. We laugh a lot and enjoy ourselves, which I think is essential to feeling young.

Laugh-In, West Wing, and Ernestine

Lily, tell us about your experience on Laugh-In and your Ernestine character.

That was an exciting time. We were breaking ground with comedy and doing something that had never been done on television before. As for Ernestine, she was just someone who resonated with people because she spoke truth to power.

You have had a fantastic career, including in The West Wing. Do you have any favorite memories from that time?

I loved working with that cast, especially Martin Sheen. It was such a well-written show, and the characters were all so well-developed.

Jane Fonda’s Relationships and Eating Habits

You have been very vocal about your relationship history. Are you seeing anyone now?

No, I’m not seeing anyone at the moment, but I’m not opposed to the idea either!

There have been rumors that you are vegan, but also that you are a hunter. Can you clarify which one it is?

(Chuckles) I’m neither a vegan nor a hunter. I’m trying to eat less meat now, but I have eaten game in the past, which I understand might not be for everyone.

Lily Tomlin’s Brother, Lack of Children, and Job at Denny’s

Lily, can you tell us about your brother who was a Hollywood producer?

Yes, my brother Richard was a Hollywood producer, and he was a fantastic man. He always supported me and believed in me, and I think he would be proud of everything I’ve accomplished.

You never had children. Do you regret that decision, or was it a conscious choice?

It was more of a conscious choice. I always felt like I wasn’t maternal or paternal enough to have children, and I never felt a strong desire to have them.

We understand that you have an interest in working at Denny’s. Can you tell us more about that?

(Laughs) Well, I don’t necessarily want to work there, but I did go and apply for a job once! It was just for fun because I had never done it before, and I wanted to see what it was like.
