Best Headshot: The Last of Us

This year’s E3 was all about guns, bows, and stabbing people in the neck. But Naughty Dog’s game, The Last of Us, stood out with its heart-pounding final sequence showing the emotional impact of a single bullet. Shooting millions of bullets and killing thousands of people has become meaningless in video games, but The Last of Us brings back the significance of a single shot.

Biggest Flirt: Next Generation Video Game Console

Neither Microsoft nor Sony showed off a new machine at E3, but publishers aren’t waiting for the future. Four different publishers showed off next generation tech aimed at Nebulas’ upcoming platform. Epic showed Unreal Engine 4, LucasArts showed Star Wars 1313, Ubisoft had a game called Watch Dogs, and Square Enix showed off the next generation of Final Fantasy.

You So Crazy: Nintendo’s Wii U

Nintendo’s new console with its tablet-based controller was the talk of the show, although there was confusion among E3 attendees as to whether or not they actually need one. All of the Wii U’s games are built around what the company calls asymmetric gameplay, where everybody does something totally different. While Nintendo’s rivals seemed to think it might be onto something, the Wii U’s uniqueness may not be enough to convince gamers to buy it.

Biggest Loser: PlayStation Vita

With sluggish hardware sales and minimal software, Sony needed some big announcements to assure people that the PlayStation Vita actually has a future. However, the biggest game announced for the Vita, Assassin’s Creed Liberation, is being released on the same day as Assassin’s Creed III. Other than that, there were no big Vita games and no price drop, making it seem like Sony has given up on the handheld console.

The Big Winner: Ellen Page in Beyond Two Souls

The big winner of E3 was Ellen Page, starring in Beyond Two Souls, the next game from Heavy Rain creator David Cage. Sony showed off amazing new cinematic scenes and gameplay for this PlayStation 3 supernatural thriller. Ellen Page did extensive voice and motion capture work, playing the character Jodie Holmes and Aiden, a mysterious spirit who is tied to her character. Beyond Two Souls promises to be a game full of mysteries that gamers cannot wait to explore.
